Guest Services Directory

    • Living on the McDiarmid property for 20 years, master carver Henry Nolla was one of many local artists and artisans to contribute to the design and artistry of the Inn.

    • Henry and his son Mark spent months during the construction of the Inn literally carving their mark throughout. Employing the art of handadzing, a distinctive textured finish derived directly from First Nations tools and methods, the visually impressive marks are evident on the surfaces of the structural beams and posts throughout the Inn. Henry’s handmade Adze can be viewed in a custom made display case, created by local artisan Robinson Cook, at the Henry Nolla Gallery located adjacent to the Driftwood Café in the Beach Building.

    • Henry’s signature pieces are the two Eagle carvings on the Yellow Cedar entrance doors to the Pointe Building, and the Orca carving on the doors of the Beach Building.

    • While Henry passed away in 2004, in association with the Inn, his carving shed continues to operate under the guidance of some of Henry’s long-time friends and fellow carvers; among them “Feather” George Yearsley, a student of Henry’s. The Henry Nolla Gallery, located adjacent to the Driftwood Café, was created to honour Henry’s contribution to the legacy of art throughout the Inn and show cases creations from both local established and up and coming artists and artisans.

    • A few of the many other artists that have contributed to the Inn include driftwood furniture maker and painter Maxwell Newhouse, painters Mark Hobson and Fred Peters as well as glass artist Sol Maya. Peter Ramos showcases scenes of the area with his black and white photographs.

    • Complimentary use of our Priority Cruiser Bicycles are available on a seasonal basis and can be signed out through the Concierge or Guest Reception in the lobby of the Beach Building. If you wish to take your bike down to the beach, please rinse off the salt water and sand at the water station provided on the path in front of the Beach Building before returning your bike to the Concierge.

In consideration of future guests, we request you keep your pet off the furniture, especially sofas, chairs and your bed.

    • The District of Tofino requires dogs to be on a leash at all times while in public streets, parks and beaches. Chesterman Beach is a key stop on the migratory path of many species of shore birds. Disturbance by dogs and people can threaten their survival, so please give the shorebirds a wide berth and keep your dog from chasing them.
